Video Assessment
FILM & SUBMIT YOUR VIDEO
FEEDBACK MAKES US BETTER
After completing a live or online MOSSA training, you’ll film yourself teaching a live class and send it to us for a technical assessment. New trainees have 90 days to submit a video and returning instructors have 30. Your video will be reviewed by MOSSA’s assessment team and, within four weeks, you’ll receive valuable feedback to help you move forward in your teaching journey.
STEPS TO ASSESSMENT
Step 1
PRACTICE & PLAN
Practice (alone and with a team), then prior to filming, review the video submission guidelines and criteria on the submission form. That way, you know the expectations for filming your program prior to pressing record.
STEP 2
FILM YOURSELF
Film yourself in a live class setting with a minimum of 5 participants. Follow the guidelines for camera angles and view, and film on low-resolution for a maximum file size of 5GB.
STEP 3
REVIEW VIDEO
Watch your video! Yes, from beginning to end, to make sure it meets the criteria and you are happy with what you are sending in. Not happy? Refilm! It’s not uncommon to need a second take before submitting.
STEP 4
SUBMIT VIDEO
Fill out the submission form, verify the checklist of criteria, and upload your video using the link provided. You will receive a confirmation email when we receive your video and results within 4 weeks.
WHY VIDEO ASSESSMENT?
To become an active instructor, trainees for every program must submit a video and pass an assessment. The instructor films the full workout in a live setting and sends it to MOSSA within 90 days of training. (Instructors who are reactivating have 30 days.) MOSSA’s team evaluates each video based on the technical and branding criteria outlined in training and returns feedback to the instructor.
Assessment is a hugely valuable part of the training for these primary reasons:
FEEDBACK FOR INSTRUCTORS
Every instructor has areas in which they can improve and the technical assessment gives specific feedback by track and criteria. Additionally, instructors learn from watching themselves teach, and we recommend video self-review often!
QUALITY FOR PARTICIPANTS
Technical assessments ensure that the basics – items like timing, programming, and execution of movements – are in place for an instructor to deliver a consistent, safe, and effective workout to participants.
FEEDBACK FOR FACILITIES
We share assessment results with the group fitness manager to let them know where an instructor excels and what areas may need improvement, correction, or even mentoring from a more experienced instructor.
FEEDBACK FOR MOSSA
Post-training, we at MOSSA need to see trainees in action, not just to ensure consistency and quality of the workouts, but to make sure our trainings and materials are working!
Assessment Criteria By Program
What Are The Assessment Criteria By Program?
Here are criteria sheets by program and the Assessment Template MOSSA’s team will use to review your video:
HOW LONG AFTER TRAINING DO I HAVE TO SUBMIT MY VIDEO FOR ASSESSMENT?
For instructors new to a program, assessment videos are due 90 days after completion of training (in person and online). For instructors who are reactivating, videos are due 30 days after training.
CAN I STILL TEACH IF MY 90-DAY ASSESSMENT DUE DATE HAS PASSED?
If you have passed your 90-day due date, you are not allowed to teach a class on your facility’s schedule and you will no longer be on Autoship. We realize that you have to teach to participants for your assessment video, so, in this situation and with your facility’s permission, you can gather some participants during an unscheduled time in the group fitness room at your facility to film your assessment video. Once you pass assessment, you will be back on Autoship and can teach on your facility’s schedule.
WHAT HAPPENS IF I DO NOT PASS ASSESSMENT?
If you do not pass your first assessment (1st submission), you will receive a RESUBMIT. This means you are not eligible to teach the program at your facility until you pass your assessment video. You have 30 days from the date of receiving your 1st submission results within which to resubmit a video for assessment at no charge (2nd submission). If you do not pass assessment again, you can resubmit one more video for a fee of $50 USD (3rd submission). After this, you will be required to repeat training in person, at half price, before you can submit any additional video assessments.
FOR 3D30, WHAT HAPPENS IF I ONLY PASS THE TRAINING SERIES OR THE 3D30 WORKOUT, BUT NOT BOTH?
If you only PASS one of the video assessments for 3D30, you will only have to resubmit a video of what you did not PASS (either the Training Series or the 3D30 workout).
HOW DO I SUBMIT MY VIDEO FOR ASSESSMENT?
All details for video assessment submission are here.
CAN I START TEACHING ON MY FACILITY’S SCHEDULE BEFORE I PASS ASSESSMENT?
Yes. With the approval of your Group Fitness Manager (or other facility management), you can start teaching on the schedule once you have completed training for all programs with the exception of 3D30 and MOVE30. We strongly recommend that you take adequate time to prepare and practice prior to teaching to members; generally, this would be no less than two to three weeks after training. For 3D30 and MOVE30, you have pass assessment prior to teaching to members.
CAN I USE ANY NOTES WHEN TEACHING?
No. You cannot use any form of notes when teaching. If you are using notes, your video will not be accepted, and you will have to refilm.
CAN I USE ANY RELEASE FOR MY VIDEO ASSESSMENT?
You can use your training release or +/- one release (i.e. If you completed your training with the JAN23 release, you could submit your video for assessment with the OCT22, JAN23 or APR23 release) if you have purchased the release. If you have not purchased the release, your video will not be accepted, and you will have to refilm.
HOW CAN I SUBMIT MY VIDEO FOR ASSESSMENT?
A link to your video can be submitted here. Note that submission is a two-step process. First, complete and submit the form with your instructor information. Second, submit video file allowing sufficient time for file to completely upload.
Please use the following naming protocol for your video file when uploading: Program Name_Release Season_First Name_Last Name.extension (e.g., Group Power_ JUL22_ Joe Smith.mov).
.
CAN I USE THE BONUS TRACKS FOR MY VIDEO ASSESSMENT?
Yes. Bonus tracks can be used to replace the tracks in the main body of the release for assessment.
.
CAN I SEE SOME EXAMPLES OF ASSESSMENT BEST PRACTICES?
Yes! This handy best practices document has simple instructors and visuals to make sure your camera and room are set up to MOSSA’s assessment standards.
WHAT SHOULD I DO IF I CANNOT COMPLETE MY ASSESSMENT VIDEO IN 90 DAYS?
You can request an extension here.
CAN I TEACH DIRECTLY TO THE VIDEO CAMERA FOR MY VIDEO ASSESSMENT?
No. You must teach in a live teaching environment with at least five participants (four for 3D30 or MOVE30).
SHOULD I SUBMIT AN ASSESSMENT VIDEO FOR GROUP RIDE, R30, OR BOTH?
You can choose to submit a video for either Group Ride or R30. If you submit a video for Group Ride and PASS, you will be able to be on Autoship and teach both Group Ride and R30. If you only submit a video for R30 and PASS, you will only be able to be on Autoship and teach R30. If, at a later time, you’d like to teach Group Ride, you will have to submit a Group Ride video at no charge and PASS.
IF I’M SUBMITTING VIDEO ASSESSMENTS FOR BOTH 3D30 AND MOVE30, WILL I HAVE TO DO THE ONLINE EDUCATION TWO TIMES?
No. You only have to do the online education once.
HOW DO I PASS VIDEO ASSESSMENT?
All details for passing video assessment are here.
DOES THE CLASS THAT I TEACH FOR ASSESSMENT HAVE TO BE A CURRENTLY SCHEDULED CLASS?
No. With the permission of your facility, you can teach at any time when the group fitness room is available.
DO I HAVE TO USE A MICROPHONE WHEN TEACHING?
While a microphone is not required, it is strongly recommended that you use one as we need to clearly hear both the music and your voice in your video.
SHOULD I WATCH MY VIDEO BEFORE SUBMITTING IT?
The Assessment Team needs to clearly hear both you and the music as well as clearly see the execution of all movements. Therefore, we strongly encourage you to watch and listen to your video in its entirety before submitting. If we are unable to clearly hear you and the music or clearly see you and your movements, or if you or your movements are cut off, your video might not be accepted, and you would have to refilm.
.
CAN I JUST SUBMIT A PORTION OF THE WORKOUT FOR ASSESSMENT?
No. You must submit the entire workout; the video must be from one teaching experience.
WHO DO I CONTACT IF I HAVE MORE QUESTIONS ABOUT ASSESSMENT?
You can contact the Assessment Team at assessment@mossa.net.
