De-Desk® Your Body is an essential six-part series designed to restore your body’s postural balance, which is diminished by the overused seated postures in our everyday lives. By investing five to ten minutes for every two hours seated, you will feel better in your body – so LET’S MOVE!

Our bodies were meant to move, yet the majority of the population spends 8-12 hours sitting during a typical workday. Flexed hips and knees, rounded backs, shrugged shoulders, arms locked in at the keyboard – it’s an assault on our posture and can contribute to reduced mobility, metabolic decline, and ‘everyday’ aches and pains that we don’t think should be part of your every day.

Our new De-Desk Your Body series includes six guided, six- to eight-minute movement sessions that you can do at or near your desk, designed to undo some of the postural harm and mechanical stresses caused by sitting, and to improve your Movement Health. You will feel immediately better in your body, just moments into a single session.

Dr. Lauren Polivka, a physical therapist and advisor to MOSSA, will help you de-desk your body using stretches, mobility movements, and basic tools that can easily be stored at your desk.

De-Desk®: A SIX-SESSION SERIES

De-Desk

These sessions offer a variety of movements designed to be revisited often and, in any order, based on your available space, equipment, and needs.

 

DE-DESK® YOUR BODY SITTING:

You’ll relieve neck and wrist stress, rotate your torso to improve mobility, un-do shoulder and hip stress, and more, all from your seat.

DE-DESK® YOUR BODY STANDING:

Use a wall to reverse the stresses of typing (wrists, forearms, and chest), and bring focus to mobility in your shoulders and your lower body.

DE-DESK® YOUR BODY FLOOR:

With a mat or towel, you’ll stretch and rotate your torso, lengthen your hamstrings and calves, and fire your glutes and abdominals.

DE-DESK® YOUR BODY SITTING & EQUIPMENT:

In your seat, you’ll use a looped band to activate your postural muscles and hips, and use a ball to work through tense spots in your low, middle, and upper back.

DE-DESK® YOUR BODY STANDING & EQUIPMENT:

Activate your upper back postural muscles using a looped band and address tight spots in your back and hips with a ball and a wall.

DE-DESK® YOUR BODY FLOOR & EQUIPMENT:

With a mat and a looped band, you’ll bring attention to the shoulders, then loosen your hip flexors and activate your core, including your hips.

MEET DR. LAUREN POLIVKA

As a licensed physical therapist, and a graduate of Northwestern University with a Doctorate of Physical Therapy, Dr. Lauren Polivka is an important and ongoing advisor to MOSSA. Her mission is to heal bodies in motion and to keep people moving, healthy, and pushing themselves forward.

I recommend that people try to get at least five minutes of movement and De-Desk for every two hours of sitting.

The De-Desk® Your Body series is part of MOSSA’s goal to improve your Movement Health – to keep you moving for life, improve your “active-life” expectancy, and ensure you feel great in your body. Our work-ins, which include De-Desk® Your Body and NIMBL Percussion sessions, facilitate recovery by reversing some of the mechanical and metabolic stresses to the body that take place during a workout and from sitting too long.

WHY THE DE-DESK YOUR BODY SERIES?

Our mission is to inspire people to move and to help people feel better in their bodies. As people spend more time in sedentary positions, starting at screens, holding devices, and hunched over computers, we wanted to provide a solution to help people undo the negative effects of too much sitting and postural imbalance.

WHAT IS A “WORK-IN”?

A work-in is a term introduced to us by our friends at the Institute of Motion (IoM). A workout is designed to put mechanical and metabolic stress on the body, generally in the form of some kind of strength training or cardio training. A “work-in” is the opposite of a workout and is designed to aid in recovery, regulate the autonomic nervous system, and combat the rigors of training and extended sedentary positions.

HOW MANY VIDEOS ARE IN THE DE-DESK YOUR BODY SERIES?

We have created six sessions – some sitting at your desk, some standing near your desk or wall, and some on the floor, and each “location” has an equipment option and a no-equipment option.

HOW LONG IS EACH DE-DESK YOUR BODY SESSION?

Each session is six to eight minutes long.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I DO A DE-DESK YOUR BODY SESSION?

We recommend that you do one session for every two hours sitting. For example, in an eight-hour workday, depending on how long you sit without getting up for lunch or a meeting, you might do two to four sessions per day.

WHAT EQUIPMENT IS NEEDED?

Not every session requires equipment, but for those that do, all you need is a simple band and a trigger-point or lacrosse ball. These items are available in the MOSSA Store.

We designed these sessions to be done easily at or near your desk at your office or your home office.
